Ralf Fastest in First Qualifying - Canadian GP

Ralf Schumacher and Juan Pablo Montoya put Williams-BMW in the perfect place for a shot at pole position on Saturday when they finished first and second fastest in the pre-qualifying session for the Canadian Grand Prix.

German Schumacher's 1:12.441 lap beat second-placed Montoya by 0.305 seconds with Spanish driver Fernando Alonso third and Japanese BAR-Honda driver Takuma Sato, splitting the Renault pair to put Italian Jarno Trulli down to fifth.

Scot David Coulthard put in a strong lap for McLaren-Mercedes to claim sixth place ahead of Briton Jenson Button in the second BAR. German Michael Schumacher finished down in eighth, 1.022 seconds off the pace in his Ferrari.

Finn Kimi Raikkonen finished ninth in the second McLaren, Italian Giancarlo Fisichella tenth in his Sauber and the second Ferrari of Brazilian Rubens Barrichello down in 11th place.

Italian Gianmaria Bruni coasted to a halt at the start of his out lap and was forced to run back to the pits after abandoning the his Minardi at the side of the track at turn two.

Jordan's third driver, German Timo Glock, standing in for Giorgio Pantano, made his first qualifying appearance in Formula One, finishing 18th - and over four seconds behind the fastest time.
