Salo sorry for blocking Barri
Toyota's Mika Salo was one of the stars of qualifying for the Austrian GP today (Saturday), putting his Toyota in the top 10, just a few tenths behind the McLaren of David Coulthard. However, the Finn blotted his copybook when he moved over on a flying Rubens Barrichello late in the session, ruining a super-quick lap for the Brazilian
Salo, who made his Ferrari debut in Austria in 1999, later apologised for the incident.
"I want to apologise to Rubens about that, I just missed seeing him completely!" Salo said. "There was a Williams in my mirror and when it went past Rubens was in the blind spot as I tried to move back across onto the racing line. Luckily he missed me because it could have been a big accident. He did well to avoid me!"
Chief designer Gustav Brunner was happy with the TF102's performance, which also allowed Allan McNish to claim 14th spot.
"I am very pleased that we have made our third top 10 qualifying position in only our sixth race," he said. "The A1-Ring has tended to suit our car a bit better than other circuits and this has been reflected in the excellent positions that Mika and Allan managed today."
