Toyota runs new engine in Hungary

Toyota tested a new specification engine in a three-day test at the Hungaroring as it continues to gear up for its entry into Formula 1 in 2002

The Cologne-based squad also began work on automatic gearshifts and on integrating the various separate electronic systems on the car.

Mika Salo completed 230 laps of running, setting a best time of 1m20.64s, with Allan McNish stopping the clocks at 1m20.66s during his 181 laps. That compares to a fastest race lap in this year's Grand Prix of 1m16.723s. Conditions were dry for the first day, but rainy and windy for the final two days.

"The new spec engine was a definite improvement," said McNish. "I concentrated most of the test on setting various parameters as well as working on the usual standard test procedures.

"We did a lot of kilometres again, which proves the endurance of the engine," he added. "I also found a pretty good balance with the chassis, which is very positive."

Salo added: "During this test we have been doing some different gearshift strategies, working on up and downshifts. I also did some launch control work, which was feeling much nicer."

Technical manager in charge of chassis Dago Rohrer said: "We have now started to work for the first time on all strategy systems together. That is electronics, launch control, traction control, engine mappings, etc. Before, we worked on each system individually."
