Post-qualifying wing change gives Alonso Austria pitlane start

Fernando Alonso will start the Formula 1 Austrian Grand Prix from the pitlane after McLaren changed his front wing ahead of the race

Alonso, who had qualified in 13th position at the Red Bull Ring, has had a different specification of front wing fitted following qualifying on Saturday.

The double world champion broke his front wing at the end of Q2, when he ran over the yellow kerbs that have caused damage to several cars this weekend.

Alonso ran wide the penultimate corner and then did likewise at the final corner, where he damaged the wing.

McLaren has also replaced a pitot static tube in Alonso's MCL33. As the changes are in breach of parc ferme regulations, he will have to take the start of Sunday's race from the pitlane.

Following the changes, McLaren has taken the opportunity to fit Alonso's car with the updated MGU-K from Renault.

He had not used in practice or qualifying, as doing so would have meant a grid penalty had he fitted it earlier.
