Silverstone, day 2: Zonta on top for Jordan…
Jordan test driver Ricardo Zonta has set the fastest time of the second day of Formula 1 testing at a wet Silverstone, while Johnny Herbert, who was top of the time sheets yesterday (Wednesday) finished at the bottom, plagued by mechanical problems
Zonta began testing today in a 2000-spec Jordan-Honda and concentrated on data collection work for the engine and software configuration during his 54 laps. The Benetton of test driver Mark Webber was second just 0.28s behind the Brazilian.
The Northamptonshire track failed to dry out all day, allowing the use of intermediate tyres in the morning and full wets in the afternoon. The conditions pleased the Michelin-shod teams, but frustrated the Bridgestone runners who wanted to carry out dry running.
The Williams-BMW of Marc Gene finished the day third, but caused one of the days red flags. The Spaniard carried out work on tyres and suspension for the Grove-based team and did several practice starts out on the circuit, but his BMW V10 died necessitating a tow back to the pits.
Pedro de la Rosa was driving the only 2001 car present and finished his second day as test driver for the Jaguar team in fourth place. The Spaniard suffered engine problems and his R2's Cosworth V10 blew just two minutes before the teams broke for lunch, and it took until 1630(GMT) to replace the unit.
Johnny Herbert was also thwarted by car trouble. He too, was carrying out testing duties for the second day with a new team, but was unable to take to the track until halfway through the afternoon session due to problems in getting his Arrows-AMT started. Testing continues tomorrow.
