Verstappen not only F1 driver criticised for moving under braking

Max Verstappen is not the only Formula 1 driver guilty of moving under braking, according to Romain Grosjean.

Many drivers have been unhappy with Verstappen changing line while defending into corners, with the matter discussed again during Friday's driver briefing.

The FIA has since clamped down on "potentially dangerous" defensive moves.

"We've seen a lot of moving under braking," said Grosjean.

"I complained about it yesterday, when watching the race from Japan.

"A lot of drivers were moving under braking. [Carlos] Sainz, Max and [Jolyon] Palmer did it to me."

When asked if the clampdown was needed, the Franco-Swiss said: "I think so.

"You can see it a lot in the younger categories so when they come to Formula 1, they do the same but we don't do the same speeds.

"Sometimes, you're going for the overtaking manoeuvre, you outbrake yourself on purpose.

"If you go straight, you go straight but if the other one moves under braking, then it could be a take-off ramp.

"So far, the guys behind always had to make the avoiding move - Kimi, Lewis and Gutierrez and so on.

"That shouldn't be the case.

"Either you stick to the right and brake on the inside or you stick to the left.

"Moving under braking is the worst thing you can do."

Lewis Hamilton, who went off at the chicane late in the Japanese Grand Prix earlier this month when Verstappen made a defensive move to the inside, claimed such tactics have become more prevalent with the arrival of a new generation of drivers.

"In the 10 years that I've been in Formula 1, it has been the same rule that all us drivers understand," said Hamilton

"It's only newcomers that have come in and are potentially not abiding by that same rule that we have all shared for many, many years.

"It has been interesting to see some new drivers have come in and chosen a different route and have a different opinion, but it is about the respect that we have for one another.

"We are travelling at serious speeds, so you commit to your defence but you don't do it whilst in braking.

"It's great that [FIA F1 race director] Charlie [Whiting] has understood the majority of drivers' opinions.

"The rules have to be very strict and clear because otherwise if they say you are allowed to move under braking, everyone will do it and we'll all start a new way of driving, which is dangerous."
