Antonelli has used clear air to post his personal best lap time of the race but he is still seven-tenths of a second slower than Leclerc who has his fresh hards up to temperature.

"Don't let other people undercut me!" Antonelli says over team radio.

Two laps after his team-mate Leclerc pits from the lead with the gap over Antonelli at 2.9s. A smart 2.4s stop and he comes back out in second - still ahead of Norris who is yet to stop.

...or not? Hamilton is called into pit by Ferrari but then he says "my tyres are still good" but comes into the pits anyway. Odd. The Ferrari driver serves his 5s penalty and takes on fresh hards.

Russell pitted at the same time and with the penalty for Hamilton the seven time world champion comes out behind.

Hamilton is complaining of "crazy understeer" which might be considered a request to pit him.

A Virtual Safety Car has been called because an umbrella has blown on to the side of the track. It ends within seconds as a marshal sprints back to his post with the rain-defending device in hand.

Usually a useful device at Silverstone, but not today! Have we mentioned it usually rains there?

None of the other frontrunners have reacted to the two Red Bull pitstops yet which gives credence to their commitment to a one-stop strategy and their belief the Milton Keynes team is two-stopping.

Two laps after Verstappen, Red Bull calls in Hadjar which releases Norris directly behind him into fifth place. The French driver also takes on fresh hard tyres and comes out in 10th.

Verstappen posts a new fastest lap of any driver with a 1m33.562s which is almost a second faster than anyone else.

Verstappen is put on the hard tyres which he will aim to take to the end of the race, but at this stage he still has strategy flexibility to convert to a two-stopper if so desired.

Leclerc still leads but his advantage is down to 3.9s over Antonelli.

Verstappen is having a good long look at the rear wing of Russell's Mercedes but isn't making much headway - that is until he gets up the inside of Russell at Copse to take fourth place!

Red Bull calls him in for a pitstop immediately to attempt an undercut on his rival to make that move stick.

Albon pits and serves his 10s penalty before taking on a fresh set of medium tyres.

"Can you tell him to hurry up please?" Lindblad asks his team. Him being his team-mate Lawson who is ahead of him by 1.1s.

Shoutout to Colapinto who is the biggest gainer in the race so far, having made seven places and is currently 12th, and tucked up behind his Alpine team-mate Gasly.

Antonelli has dropped Hamilton by one second but Leclerc is still building his lead which is up to 4.5s. A very impressive opening stint for the Ferrari driver so far.

"The downshifts are so ****," Verstappen reports over team radio. Verstappen and his downshifts, the love-hate relationship of 2026.

Antonelli makes his move on Hamilton for second! He dives up the inside of Hamilton at Copse and the Ferrari driver has no answer.

You can't throw a wheel down the inside at Copse, a former Red Bull team boss once said...

Russell is told by his team they have no gearbox concerns after the British driver reported a downshift issue. Verstappen is slowly catching Russell with the gap at 1.4s.

Hamilton has bigger worries for now as he is under pressure from Antonelli in the fight for second place. The Ferrari driver is suffering with front-left tyre graining which is costing him time.

All that is allowing Leclerc to get further out in front - he leads by 3.1s.

Hamilton made a small stutter forward before the lights went out, and then went back to stationary, so he is guilty of the offence despite gaining no lasting advantage. But rules are rules.

Hamilton is given a five-second penalty for moving before the race start which he will serve at his pitstop later in this race.

Leclerc has a 2.2s lead over Hamilton - who is now under investigation for the false start - with Antonelli within a second of the British driver.

Russell has dropped off the back of the top three but is clear of Verstappen by 1.5s.

Hamilton has been noted for moving before the signal at the start. He's currently second so if he is penalised that'll wreck his race proper.

It goes from bad to worse for Albon who is given a 10s penalty for clashing with Bearman.

The FIA stewards are looking into the Albon and Bearman clash on the opening lap. Albon is currently 22nd, after Piastri's own lengthy stop put him 21st.

Verstappen gets by Red Bull team-mate Hadjar to move into fifth place at the Loop, which gives Russell a bit of time to escape up the road.

Leclerc leads Hamilton by 1.2s, with Antonelli 1.1s further back.

Hulkenberg has also had an off-track moment and he's now down in 19th place.

So early drama for the German driver plus Bearman, Piastri and Albon.

Leclerc leads from Hamilton with Antonelli and Russell shadowing them.

Piastri has front wing damage and pits at the end of lap 2.

There's also been a clash in the midfield involving Bearman and Albon - the William driver pits at the end of lap one.

Antonelli gets a poor start and loses the lead to Leclerc and then Hamilton takes second off him into Farm. Verstappen has nipped ahead of Norris into sixth, while Piastri had a nightmare start and is down to 14th.

Antonelli leads 21 drivers on to the starting grid so here we go...

Oh, Fernando... Alonso has got an issue on the formation lap and he has dived into the pitlane. He briefly came to a halt at Becketts.

The two green lights signal the start of the formation lap and it looks like every driver has opted for a fresh set of medium tyres for the start. Most, if not all, drivers will target a one-stopper but whether they switch to softs or hards for the second stint will be decided much later on.

tyres

Every single driver is starting on medium tyres for this one. In terms of who is on fresh mediums or used ones, we'll let you know as soon as they take the tyre blankets off for the formation lap.

As mentioned earlier, it is bright and sunny at Silverstone (for once!) so no chance of rain interrupting this race.

The air temperature is up at 24.4C and the track temperature is climbing above 41C - that's hotter than the sprint race and could push teams on strategy if it is borderline on stretching tyre life.

Right, the pre-race faff is over and the grid is clearing for the main stars to take centre stage.

Who are you backing for British GP glory?

The British national anthem is sung by Deb Orah, who must've been inspired by part-time F1 fanatic and music man Will.i.am with that name.

The grid is packed out with stars of British sport and entertainment: Phil Foden, Sir Chris Hoy, Jack Grealish, Lewis Capaldi, Justin Rose, Ellie Kildunne, Jeremy Clarkson to name but a few.

And a certain former Red Bull F1 team boss...
