Formula 1 Pre-Season Test

F1 Bahrain pre-season test - Day 3

Minute by minute updates on the final day of the 2024 F1 Bahrain pre-season test

George Russell, Mercedes F1 W15

After its stunning 2023 season when it won all but one grand prix, Red Bull is the team everybody wants to beat and began the test in ominous fashion as Max Verstappen ended up over a second quicker than the field on the opening day.

But Carlos Sainz responded by topping day two for Ferrari, albeit on a softer tyre compound than Red Bull's Sergio Perez used, after red flag delays caused by a dislodged drain cover.

The Bahrain pre-season test will conclude on 23 February, with the day’s track action starting at 7am GMT (10am local time).

After nearly 40 minutes sat in the garage, Leclerc is back out in the Ferrari on some fresh C3s, and he still tops the times having been on the softer tyres earlier this afternoon.
In fact, all the drivers on track at the moment are on long runs, so don't expect any headline-grabbing times for a bit.
Alonso is back out on the track, this time on a high fuel run in his Aston Martin. Verstappen has pitted so it is just the Spaniard, Piastri, Hulkenberg, Albon and Zhou out right now.
Verstappen hasn't missed a beat getting into the rhythm with the RB20 and is on another longer stint on the C3 compound. Will he and Red Bull fancy a soft tyre run at the end of the day to really flex their muscles?
Tsunoda leaps up to 13th with a 1m32.662s on the C3s for RB. This is like a proper free practice session now.
In the lunch break that wasn't an actual lunch break, Verstappen led the calls for F1 to properly solve the recent track issues that has seen cars sucking up drains and covers. Here's the full story.

"We know that this is a potential problem with these cars, and when you go to certain tracks, you know where the drain covers are."

Russell, still on C3s, improves with a 1m32.163s but remains 11th overall for today. Further back, Zhou also puts in a new personal best for today with a 1m37.179s but is still 19th and not targeting performance running.
Thanks Sam, good afternoon everyone, how are we? The sun is starting to set and we're in the final two hours of testing. It's been emotional.
And with that, I end my stint for pre-season testing this year and leave you in the capable hands of Haydn Cobb. Will we see any low-fuel runs to end the day? Only time will tell. Over to you Haydn...
Verstappen is now on a long run, lapping around six seconds off the pace and building his lap count which currently stands at a relatively low 18 for the afternoon.
There's a marker from McLaren! A 1m31.322s from Piastri puts him into P4, less than one-tenth behind Alonso.
An improvement incoming from Piastri, who goes green in sector one and keeps up the pace in sector two.
And Alonso also improves with a 1m31.159s, putting him third behind Leclerc and Verstappen.
That said, Leclerc sets a personal best first sector and goes purple in the remaining two segments to register a 1m30.322s. He moves 0.4s clear of Verstappen.
What we have now could widely be described as the calm before the storm, with few drivers improving on their times at this point.

Alonso pulls into the pits, and the Aston Martin crew use the opportunity to conduct a practice pitstop. It's great to see how accurate the mechanics are up close and personal, as he gets a swift service before a roll-back into the garage.
On go the lights around the Bahrain International Circuit, a clear sign that darkness is almost upon us.
And across the line, Piastri fails to improve on the C3 tyre. A cool-down effort and then likely another push lap for the Australian.
Wide at Turn 11 for Piastri as he loses almost a second in sector two.
Following his early stint of 18 laps, Piastri has been rarely seen on the track, completing only 10 further laps while moving up to P6.

He's now on a performance run and sets a personal best sector one.
And Leclerc falls less than one-tenth short of his own personal best. Hardly a shabby effort!
It's the C4 tyre this time for Leclerc rather than the softest C5 option. He falls only 0.035s off the pace in sector one.
Russell, Albon, Gasly and Zhou are all currently on long runs - possibly their final race simulations before pre-season testing comes to a close.
Back to the track for Leclerc. Will he lower the benchmark further?
There will be a full feature coming later today on the winners of testing. But one of those unlikely to feature in the top category are Sauber. Neither Bottas nor Zhou (currently on the track) have shown pace.
But it's a slow middle and final sector for Alonso, who ultimately fails to improve and backs off after crossing the line.
Speaking of improvement, however, Alonso has gone purple in sector one! Here come the glory runs!
But it's not the hot lap we had expected from Russell as he fails to improve on his previous best.
Here comes Russell for his next attempt as he winds up the Mercedes through the final corner.
Russell was on a hot lap, going green in the opening sector as the sun sets, but a lock-up at Turn 8 causes him to run wide and bail on the lap. A quick pit stop and he returns to the track.
On the C4 tyres, Leclerc moves to the top of the order with a 1m30.409, putting him 0.354s ahead of Verstappen, but on tyres one step softer.

That's still slower than the testing-best from Thursday.
An improved time for Gasly but he remains in P12. Russell currently holds the final place inside the top 10.
Having been pushed down to P4, Leclerc now takes to the track. Having passed Alonso, Gasly is now on his latest hot lap.
After two-and-a-half days of mainly long runs and data gathering, it looks like the focus has finally shifted to outright pace. Alonso is the lastest to improve, going third, 0.502s back on Verstappen.
...and green in the final sector. Verstappen lowers the benchmark again with a 1m30.763s.
A personal best middle sector and Gasly also goes green in the final sector, with the resulting 1m33.027s moving him to 12th in the Alpine that is sporting additional blue on the nose.
