Barcelona F1 test two day one

Gasly can't better his table-topping effort with his first run, but his 1m18.990s would still be good enough for fourth on the leaderboard.
Albon does improve his time - but not his position - in the Toro Rosso with a 1m19.689s.
Russell is also back out after a pretty productive morning for Williams. Looks like he's about to improve, too...
A 1m19.662s is the Williams driver's first effort on this run.
Giovinazzi heads back out in the Alfa Romeo with 20 minutes left on the clock.
No further improvements from Albon or Russell for the time being, but both are lapping in the 1m20-21s bracket.
NEW FASTEST TIME KLAXON! Giovinazzi goes fastest with a 1m18.589s.
Former McLaren racing chief Eric Boullier is back in the Formula 1 paddock. Not with another team, though. The ex-Renault/Lotus/McLaren man has been drafted in as 'strategic advisor (sport and operational)' and a 'global ambassador' of the French Grand Prix, and he's here at Barcelona.

I'm pretty sure Boullier's presence marks the first time he's been in the paddock since he left McLaren last summer. We've not seen him since last year's Austrian Grand Prix.
After that brief moment of excitement, everything's calmed down on track. Giovinazzi, Gasly, Magnussen, Albon and Hulkenberg are out there right now.
Stroll has also headed out, although our on-track count remains at seven as Russell returns to the Williams pit.
New personal best first and second sectors from Leclerc on this lap.
He can't improve in the final sector though and remains third. Looks as though the Ferrari man is on C3s.
Stroll puts in his personal best through the first sector, which is a tenth shy of Giovinazzi's benchmark.
The Racing Point driver can't improve either though and stays fourth.
Leclerc and Stroll set similar first sector times. The Ferrari driver's is a personal best, but Stroll's isn't.
In the end neither improves their overall time, allowing us to continue the theme of our last few posts.

Less than five minutes left now until the lunch break. For your information, of course, not because we're wishing them away.
It's just Gasly, Russell and Norris (after his red-flag inducing off) in the pits for now as we approach the end of the morning session.
A smattering of pitlane drive-bys happening now as we enter the final minute.
We would contest Mercedes' 96-lap claim. Our timing screen suggests Hamilton completed (a still impressive) 83 laps, one less than Magnussen managed in the Haas.
OK, the second test might already be underway, but here are the key questions we want to see answered in this second week at Barcelona.

This year is an exceptional one for F1 rookies - the top three from last year's F2 title fight, plus 2016 GP2 runner-up Antonio Giovinazzi getting his first full campaign.

What should George Russell, Lando Norris, Alexander Albon and Giovinazzi focus on to make the most of this year as they try to cement a long-term F1 career?

Autosport Performance got expert advice for the newcomers from Juan Pablo Montoya, Sir Jackie Stewart, Gary Anderson and Ralph Firman:

News from (not too far) afield. Fernando Alonso - remember him? - has picked a new race number for his 2019 Indianapolis 500 bid, and it's one synonymous with McLaren's success in the event.

This afternoon Hamilton hands the keys to the Mercedes over to Bottas.

Over at Ferrari, Leclerc can enjoy the afternoon sun as Vettel climbs into the Ferrari.

Renault will do similar with Hulkenberg vacating his seat for Ricciardo to run this session.

Everyone else? As you were.
We can hear pitguns chirping up and down the pitlane, so we're moments away from cars moving.
We're underway, and no-one hits the track straightaway.
