Esports News: BRDC launches charity sim racing series to raise money for NHS
The British Racing Drivers Club has launched a new sim racing series, the BRDC Esports Championship, to raise money for the National Health Service
The five-round series on simulator platform, iRacing was set up by BRDC SuperStars director Andy Meyrick and will use Formula 3 cars across five Formula 1 circuits.
Up to 40 BRDC members will participate in the weekly championship, with entries coming from the BRDC's Rising Stars and SuperStars programmes as well as some of its most famous alumni.
The series will run in partnership with Silverstone-based driver coaching and simulator specialists iZone, where many of the BRDC members train.
Each competitor will make a minimum donation of £50 to join the grid and all of the money raised from the series will be given to NHS Charities Together.
"With the current global pandemic, the BRDC's focus is on supporting the NHS and key workers," Meyrick explained.
"We want to do our part and whilst we can't race at a circuit, we can still race online, and this will allow us to raise funds for a very worthy cause.
"We thought the BRDC Esports Championship with iZone would be a perfect way of pitting different generations against each other while raising some money for great charities in the process.

"We're also very excited to see members from different disciplines facing off against each other, from GTs and touring cars to single-seaters.
"I have to thank everyone for their help and support in setting this up so quickly. I look forward to seeing a varied grid of BRDC Members at the first race and am excited to see who will come out on top.
"If there are any incidents, we can call upon former BRDC president and FIA steward Derek Warwick to settle any on track disputes."
Among the 2020 SuperStars is 2017 British Touring Car Championship winner Ash Sutton, Formula 2 racers Dan Ticktum and Callum Ilott, as well as 2019 Aston Martin Autosport BRDC Young Driver of the Year winner Johnathan Hoggard.
Entries are open to BRDC members until 7 May, with the season-opening race at Silverstone taking one week later.
The remaining rounds will take place at Monza, Spa-Francorchamps and Suzuka, with the finale taking place at Interlagos.
