Moscow DTM: Mattias Ekstrom penalised, Timo Glock hits out over clash

Mattias Ekstrom has been handed a grid penalty for Sunday's Moscow Raceway DTM race, following a clash that prompted Timo Glock to brand the Swede an "idiot"

The pair came together approaching the halfway mark of Saturday's 40-minute race, when BMW driver Glock was defending fourth place from erstwhile championship leader Ekstrom.

Ekstrom looked down the inside at Turn 7, and the pair came together, both firing into the gravel trap, with Ekstrom's Audi making heavy contact with the tyre barriers.

RACE REPORT: Wehrlein wins to reclaim points lead

Glock took to Twitter post-race to vent his frustration.

He told Ekstrom to "watch the race from [Pascal] Wehrlein and learn you idiot! How stupid you need to be to overtake in that corner!"

Ekstrom was deemed at fault for the collision and handed a three-place grid penalty for Sunday's hour-long race.

"Mattias Ekstrom's manoeuvre came as a complete surprise to me," Glock added.

"In my opinion, there is no way you can overtake in this corner. I did not expect him to be so aggressive at this point on the track.

"I suddenly felt an impact and was pushed off the track. I started the race from a good position, but somehow it is just not meant to be this year."

As a result of his first DNF of the season, Ekstrom drops to second in the championship, eight points behind Saturday victor Wehrlein.

"Timo was starting to have problems and getting slower," he said.

"I was already running side by side with him and didn't expect him not to leave me any room.

"But apparently the going is now getting tougher in this stage of the championship."

The Abt squad is facing a long night of repairs, with Ekstrom's team-mate Miguel Molina's Audi also extensively damaged in a first-corner accident.

HWA Mercedes is also racing against time to repair Christian Vietoris' C-Coupe, which made heavy contact with Molina's Audi and caught fire against the inside barrier.
