Green snatches pole from Schneider

Britain's Jamie Green will start on pole position for the first round of this year's DTM at Hockenheim tomorrow

Green edged out DTM legend and circuit specialist Bernd Schneider by one tenth of a second as the new Formula One-syle qualifying format got its first airing.

Canadian Bruno Spengler made it a Mercedes 1-2-3 as the marque aims to keep up its Hockenheim winning streak tomorrow.

The new format had its casualties, with Jean Alesi falling out after the first round. Mika Hakkinen came close to missing the cut in both of the first two rounds, eventually setting seventh-fastest time, some way off the pace.

Audi's best performer was Martin Tomczyk in fourth, with 2004 champion Mattias Ekstrom sixth.

Audi's other star, Tom Kristensen, was knocked out in the middle session after a controversial brush with fellow Audi man Heinz Harald Frentzen on his fastest lap.
