Grapevine: Audi teams in paper boat race
Audi have set their DTM teams the bizarre challenge of building papier-mache boats for this weekend's race at the Norisring
The first Audi Dutzendteich Challenge will take place on Friday night of this weekend's race meeting, and all ten of Audi's drivers will propel their team's creations across the nearby Dutzendteich lake.
The mechanics invested their free time in building their ships and have kept their design's secret from each other.
The competition will be awarded not just on how quick the boat gets across the lake - if indeed it actually does - but the originality will be judged too.
Former DTM Champion Mattias Ekstrom tested his boat at Lake Constance last week. His Audi Sport Team Abt Sportsline used extreme canoeist Schorschi Schauf as a consultant and copied his kayak.
The Audi customer team, Futurecom TME, is going to enter two different constructions.
"One featuring a classical bathtub design, and one an innovative and sleek-looking Robinson Crusoe/nutshell mix," said a teamspokesperson.
Five boats each will be competing in two preliminary heats. The winners of the two preliminary runs qualify for the final.
The winning mechanics win tickets to a home match of Audi's partner Bayern Munich.
