DTM to make Donington return

DTM organisers the ITR have announced at the Essen Motorshow that Donington Park in England will host a round of the German-based series next year

The Derbyshire circuit hosted the DTM in its previous incarnation from 1990-'91 and '92-'95. It joins Zandvoort in Holland, A1-Ring in Austria and Zolder in Belgium as 'away' races for the series.

Next year's 10-round DTM calendar has been altered due to some clashes with other events. The season finale at Hockenheim could still be changed to October 20 if the Sachsenring or Lausitz date on July 2 doesn't take place due to the clash with the Nurburgring 24 Hours.

One of the eastern German circuits seems certain to get the boot from the calendar, with either Oschersleben or Sachsenring likely to make way.

Mercedes, meanwhile, has confirmed it is likely to run nine cars next year, including four new-shape CLKs. Drivers Bernd Schneider, Jean Alesi, Uwe Alzen, Peter Dumbreck, Marcel Fassler and Thomas Jager were also confirmed for 2002.

April 21, Hockenheim
May 5, Zolder
May 19, Donington
June 2, Sachsenring or Lausitz
June 30, Norisring
July 14, Oschersleben or Lausitz
August 4, Nurburgring
September 8, A1-Ring
September 29, Zandvoort
October 6, Hockenheim
