Alesi says DTM deal should happen
Formula 1 retiree Jean Alesi has given the thumbs up for a move to Germany's DTM championship for next year
Alesi heaped praise on this year's DTM champion Bernd Schneider's AMG Mercedes CLK after a test at Hockenheim two weeks ago and the former grand prix ace has given his best indication yet that he will race in the series in 2002.
"This championship appeals to me a lot and I feel like driving a competitive car again," Alesi told French television Infosport. "We still have to sort out a few details with Mercedes-Benz, but there should not be any problems."
The Frenchman turned his back on F1 at the end of the 2001 season after 12 years in the sport, but he has made no secret of the fact that he intends to continue racing.
Alesi has admitted to have turned his back on a move to the US-based Champ Car series, which was thought to be another option for the 37-year-old. Mercedes Sport boss Norbert Haug also sees no reason why Alesi shouldn't thrive in the DTM.
"I can see no reason why a competitive F1 driver should not be competitive in the DTM," said Haug. "These guys are the best international drivers."
