Turkington on Oulton Park pole

Colin Turkington will start the first of tomorrow's three British Touring Car Championship races at Oulton Park from pole position

The Team RAC driver set a best time of 1:28.534 around the Cheshire circuit in his BMW 320si, pipping Team Dynamics' Gordon Shedden by 0.054 of a second.

It is Turkington's second pole of the season, having started from the front row of the grid during the first race of the season at Brands Hatch, and follows on from his victory last time out at Croft.

"We've sort of been quick all day but not as lightning quick as in qualifying," he told autosport.com. "I'm absolutely delighted to be on pole - for the reason that I get a point!

"My confidence was up after getting to the last meeting. I knew we had a quick car and that we'd be fast everywhere after that. We've unlocked the potential; today just shows that."

Lining up on the second row of the grid will be reigning champ Matt Neal and SEAT's Darren Turner. Current championship leader Jason Plato qualified in fifth place, while Fabrizio Giovanardi - who lies just two points behind him in the title race - will be behind him in sixth position.

Turkington's luck was not shared by his teammate, Tom Onslow-Cole, who caused the qualifying session to be red flagged after heavy contact with the tyre wall exiting Cascades.
