Shedden wins race one

Gordon Shedden converted his first British Touring Car pole position into his second win of the season in race one at Thruxton

Despite a mediocre start, Shedden took the lead in his Team Dynamics Honda Integra-R at the off after fellow front row starter Colin Turkington struggled to get away in his WSR MG ZS. The Scot was never headed as he led from lights to flag, eventually coming home 6.8 seconds clear of his championship-leading teammate Matt Neal.

Tom Chilton, who qualified third in the lead Vauxhall Astra Sport Hatch, held second in the early stages before the onset of tyre wear problems allowed both Neal and the SEAT Leon of Jason Plato to pass him through the complex on lap nine.

Once clear of Chilton, Plato looked set to dispatch Neal for third only to drop out of the race after 13 laps. This put Chilton back into third, only for Darren Turner, making his British Touring Car Championship debut in the second SEAT, to squeeze up the inside into the complex on the last lap.

Rob Collard claimed a battling fifth in the second MG after slipping past the Vauxhall of Gavin Smith on the penultimate lap. Smith had run as high as fifth in the early stages, but, like Chilton, struggled with tyre wear on the abrasive surface of the high-speed circuit.

Turkington salvaged three points by coming from the back to finish eighth, albeit not close enough to James Kaye's Synchro Motorsport Honda Civic Type-R to challenge for seventh.

Fabrizio Giovanardi retired his Astra after contact with David Pinkney's Motorbase Performance Honda Integra-R at the chicane on lap two, while the second independent Integra of Mike Jordan pulled out of the race at the end of the formation lap.
