Plato wins Silverstone race one

Jason Plato claimed his eighth British Touring Car Championship victory of the year in a wet opening race at Silverstone, and reduced Fabrizio Giovanardi's championship lead from 41 points to 30

The SEAT driver started from pole position and led the race from start to finish, with enough of a cushion over Mat Jackson to prevent the BMW man from making an assault on the lead.

Jackson's was the drive of the race. After starting 14th, he had made it up to sixth by the end of the opening lap and, after carving through a few more cars, made a decisive move for second place on Darren Turner at Copse on lap 20. He fell short of victory by just half a second.

Turner was third and Colin Turkington was fourth after passing Giovanardi's Vauxhall with three laps to go.

Behind Giovanardi, who was the top Vauxhall driver, came his teammate Matt Neal, Turkington's teammate Stephen Jelley - who scored the best BTCC finish of his career in seventh - and Adam Jones.

Jones was one of the few drivers to start the race with slick tyres on the front of his car, and had to make an unscheduled pit stop early on to change to wets all round.

Steven Kane looked to be on for a great finish after leaping up from sixth on the grid to second by the first corner of the race, but the BMW driver's race ended in the Woodcote gravel early on while battling with Neal.
