Jackson thrilled with runner-up spot

Mat Jackson was delighted to finish runner-up in this year's British Touring Car Championship following his two victories at Brands Hatch on Sunday

The BMW driver moved ahead of Jason Plato in the championship with fourth place in the final race of the year and finished up 36 points behind Fabrizio Giovanardi in just his second full season in the series.

Jackson was thrilled to earn his place among such company after an excellent season where his five wins equalled the haul of the champion.

"It's been a fantastic season, where we've ended up is awesome," he said. "The names Giovanardi and Plato are instantly recognisable and to be in there with them is significant.

"When finishing second is ahead of someone of Jason's calibre, and I'm second only to an eight-time touring car champion, it really has value.

"Had Jason and SEAT not had some back luck, then maybe I'd have been third at best, but positions are won and lost over an entire season."

Jackson is aiming to challenge for the title next season, but admits he still has a lot to learn.

"Of course I'd want to go one better, but I'm still learning," added the 27-year-old. "The moment you think there's nothing else to learn you're going to struggle.

"Look at Fabrizio and Jason, they are 40-plus and perhaps now at the height of their powers. I've got 13 years to go before I get there and they are probably both still learning."
