Fabrizio Giovanardi pins BTCC Donington hopes on car changes
Returning British Touring Car champion Fabrizio Giovanardi believes improvements to his Ford Focus will allow him to move up the field at the Donington Park round this weekend
Giovanardi returned to the series for the season opener at Brands Hatch last month, but had a difficult weekend.
The Italian believes revisions to the 2014-specification Motorbase machine will now allow him to improve on his Brands best of ninth.
"This weekend will hopefully be better for us," he said. "We had a big analysis of the car after Brands.
"With the changes we have made for the set-up we should have a much more balanced car - especially in qualifying where we need to make the biggest improvement.
"If you can get out in front in qualifying then that is 80 per cent of the work done."
The two-time BTCC champion believes that he and Motorbase can aim much higher for the second round of the series.
"I am aiming for podiums this weekend," he said. "I'm quite far away from the top at the moment but it's a long championship.
"We are only in the second round. I'm looking for points this weekend and just to be back in the fight."
Giovanardi currently lies 16th in the BTCC driver standings, 38 points behind leader Andrew Jordan.
