Brands Hatch BTCC: Giovanardi admits he needs more pace

Returning British Touring Car champion Fabrizio Giovanardi has conceded work needs to be done to get his Ford Focus on the pace in qualifying trim.

Six of the seven series champions were in the top 10 in first practice at Brands Hatch, but Giovanardi's Motorbase machine was 16th, with team-mates Mat Jackson and Jack Clarke 15th and 24th respectively.

BTCC 2014: Why it will be unmissable

The 2007 and 2008 champion believes the car is competitive on old tyres, but is not yet getting the best out of fresh rubber.

"The car is not too bad, but we need to find performance on new tyres," he told AUTOSPORT. "I still need to learn the car.

"It's a really reactive car compared to the S2000s I've driven and the feedback is different.

"The tyres have good performance because they are big, but if the front to rear balance isn't right it's difficult to drive.

"As the tyres fall away, on average lap time, we are not far off."
