National Racing Driver: Mike Conway
Mike Conway has won National Racing Driver of the year at the 2006 Autosport Awards
Autosport Awards
The Autosport Awards are a series of awards presented by motor racing magazine Autosport to drivers that have achieved significant milestones each season. Some of the presentations are selected by the general public via a reader's poll.
The 23-year-old dominated the British Formula Three championship with Double R Racing this year, and he topped his season off with victory in the Macau Grand Prix last month.
"Macau was great. I did it last year and I always wanted to go back and win it," he said after collecting his award from Murray Walker and Derek Warwick.
"It's great for the British F3 teams because they work so hard and we showed we can beat the F3 Euro Series teams."
Conway is likely to race in GP2 next year, and he was able to make his series debut in the category on home soil at Silverstone earlier this year with DPR.
In winter testing he has already shown his potential, as he set the fastest time in the final afternoon of GP2 action at Valencia on Saturday with reigning champions ART.
While he doesn't have a deal confirmed for next year, Conway has been talking to several teams and is optimistic of signing a deal in the near future.
"We are close to a deal with a team for next year and hopefully we will know for sure soon," he added.
