Yvan Muller dominates first practice at Valencia for Chevrolet
World Touring Car champion Yvan Muller got his Valencia weekend off to a great start in his quest to overturn RML Chevrolet team-mate Rob Huff's points lead by topping first practice on Saturday morning
In the final European round before the three end-of-season flyaways, Muller lapped in 1m42.936s, 0.6 seconds faster than his Cruze team-mates Alain Menu and Huff. They were closely matched, 1m43.579s versus 1m43.610s.
Best of the rest was BMW privateer Tom Coronel (ROAL), who was right on the non-Muller Chevy pace on 1m43.673s. Robert Dahlgren's Polestar-run Volvo was next up, a couple of tenths off Coronel.
Former champion Gabriele Tarquini was sixth fastest, and first SEAT, but ended his session in the Turn 1 gravel trap after losing it under braking at the end of the start/finish straight. Another to bin it here was Franz Engstler, who spun his BMW into the gravel after setting what would stand as the eighth fastest time, behind ex-Formula 1 racer Tiago Monteiro (SEAT).
