Watt gets Peugeot drive

Jason Watt will line up alongside fellow Dane Jan Magnussen in Peugeot Sport Engineering's ETCC squad, starting with the Donington Park round at the end of this month. Watt, who was a works Alfa DTM driver in 1996 will drive a three-door 307 as Magnussen uses the new five-door car

Watt was a race-winner in Formula 3000 in 1999, but a bike accident at the end of the year left him with paralysed legs. He returned to racing in Denmark and won the Danish Touring Car Championship in 2002, but has rarely been seen in international events since.

"You know, for me it's a special occasion, because this will mark my comeback to international racing," said Watt. "After my accident I focused on the Danish Championship, and now I'm so happy to be back internationally, meeting again a lot of people I used to know, like Gabriele Tarquini who was my team-mate at JAS in 1996. I'm proud to be in Donington, because it's another step to prove that, if you really want, you can have a successful sporting career even if you suffered from a serious accident."

Watt and Magnussen are also team-mates in the DTCC - Watt won the lastest round of the championship at Jyllands-Ringen and though the Peugeot is not yet competitive in the ETCC, Watt believes the pair can work well together to improve it.

"I'm perfectly aware that it won't be an easy task," he said. "Everything is new to me, and I haven't got the most competitive car. The team is still in a learning phase, and I want to make my contribution in developing the 307. With me at the track, the team will be able to compare different set up solutions. We have done it before, with Magnussen, in the Danish Championship, and it worked. Let's hope we can do it again, improving the ETCC car."
