Race 2: Muller beats Priaulx

Dirk Muller took the lead of the FIA European Touring Car Championship with victory in the second race at Brno. The BMW Deutschland driver had to fight his way up from fifth on the grid and then soaked up intense pressure from first race winner Andy Priaulx in the last couple of laps

Priaulx's BMW Team Great Britain 320i was clearly the fastest car this weekend and it helped him move within five points of the championship lead. The Guernseyman stormed through the field having started eighth on the reverse grid.

With two laps to go he was up to second and quickly got on the tail of the Team Deutschland car which was carrying 40kg of ballast. Priaulx had several looks down the inside but Muller guarded his lead well. Eventually the race was just one lap too short for the Guernsyman and he was forced to settle for second.

"It was a race that really worked for me," said Muller afterwards. "I'm really, really happy. One more lap and he would definitely have passed me. I was sliding everywhere - the extra ballast really makes a difference up the hill."

Poleman Franck Diefenbacher confidently led the race for several laps in the improving SEAT. The German ran second in the early laps behind the fast-starting Jorg Muller but moved ahead as the BMW Deutschland car developed a problem. As the laps wore on however Diefenbacher's front-wheel drive car ate through its tyres and he slipped back to third.

Muller nursed his car home to fourth ahead of SEAT's Rickard Rydell in fifth and Fabrizio Giovanardi sixth - the only Autodelta Alfa Romeo to finish. Antonio Garcia was seventh with Tom Coronel eighth.
