Thommo closes on Alfa seat

Former British Touring Car champion James Thompson is moving closer to a fulltime step up to the new-for-2005 World Touring Car Championship with the works Autodelta Alfa Romeo team

Thompson has been drafted into the Alfa ETCC squad for a couple of rounds, including last Saturday's races at Spa in Belgium, and will also contest the Oschersleben and Dubai events. He regularly races for the works Vauxhall outfit in the BTCC, and is a close friend of Alfa's reigning ETCC champion, Gabriele Tarquini.

"I like it very much in the ETCC," said Thompson. "I also like it where I am in the BTCC. It is too early to talk about next year, but Alfa are clearly sounding me out."

The 30-year-old Yorkshireman has been delighted with the way things have gone so far in Europe, even though he had to dash back to England to get married on Saturday.

"This is an excellent opportunity to come and learn new circuits," he said. "That's why I did Spa on my wedding day! If I did race fulltime in Europe, I need to know all the tracks."

Autodelta team manager Monica Sipsz said: "Of course we are talking to James and we would like to have him, but nothing is fixed at the moment."
