Rydell to drive Chevrolet in Sweden

Rickard Rydell is to make a one-off return to the World Touring Car Championship with Chevrolet at Anderstorp in July

The Swede's only racing apperance so far this year has been the Le Mans 24 Hours, where he won the GT1 class with Aston Martin.

He lost his SEAT WTCC drive at the end of last season, but will rejoin the series in a fourth works Chevrolet Lacetti for the Swedish event. The appearance has been organised by the championship's television broadcaster Eurosport.

"I am very pleased to have this opportunity for my home race," said Rydell.

"I am confident we can do an excellent job and I will do my utmost to contribute to the team's efforts.

"I mainly consider myself as a touring car driver, these are the cars I enjoy the most, and I am very happy to be back in WTCC. I thank Chevrolet and Eurosport for this."

Chevrolet's motorsport manager Eric Neve believes Rydell is capable of taking a win on his debut with the team.

"In general, we are not favorable to one-shot appearances, but in this case, with the Lacetti and Rickard, we really have a potential winning combination," said Neve.

"We have organised a one-day test in England early July, so Rickard will have the time to acquaint himself with the Lacetti."

Team principal Ray Mallock added: "It is fantastic to have Rickard with us. Our car is working well and he is one of the best touring car drivers in the world and a WTCC race winner. I am sure he will be fighting at the top and that his presence will benefit the entire team."

The 29 July races will mark the championship's first appearance in Sweden since 2003, when it still ran under the European title.
