ETCC Super Prod’ qualifying: Kox leaves it late

Peter Kox will start round five of the Super Production class of the FIA European Touring Car Championship from pole at Zolder, Belgium, as he bids to regain the series lead

ETCC Super Prod’ qualifying: Kox leaves it late

Dutchman Kox left it late, however, as young Ravaglia Motorsport BMW team mate Norman Simon headed the times with just 50secs remaining. But the German was denied his first pole of the season as Kox pipped him by 0.018secs on his second run on new tyres, then hammered the point home with a lap of 1m43.571s, 0.271secs faster than his nearest rival.

"It was very good," said Kox. "Our cars are fantastic at the moment. You must remember this is a new team and they're doing a great job. It looks easy, but it's not."

Simon said: "I was disappointed to lose pole, yes, but at least it's still within the team. I had big problems in the free practice sessions, so we changed everything on the car, but I didn't expect it to be so good."

Series leader Duncan Huisman was third quickest in his Carly Motors BMW 320i, ahead of his team mate and top local Frederic Bouvy.

"I'm not too disappointed but I destroyed my chances myself," said Huisman. "I made two big mistakes on my qualifying lap, but I've saved four tyres for the race."

The third Carly car of Peggan Andersson was fifth, ahead of Stefano Gabellini, Gianni Morbidelli and the first non-BMW, the Nissan Primera of Tommy Rustad.
