Munnich Motorsport commits to World Rallycross Championship in 2014

World Touring Car race winner and 2012 GT1 world champion Munnich Motorsport will return to its rallycross roots in the new world championship next year

The German squad, which is contesting its final World Touring Car Championship round in Macau this weekend before leaving the series, will run an Audi A3 Supercar for team boss Rene Munnich - a three-time German champion - in the new series.

The first Audi, which will operate as a development car, has been completed with testing due to start imminently. Munnich said the build of a second A3 - which he will campaign next year - is underway.

"The first car is for testing and development. The car I race next year will look different because the bodywork on the first car is not quite right for rallycross," Munnich said.

"It's OK for testing but we will change it for the race car. We plan to do as much testing as possible and use that to make improvements for the racecar."

The team, which will also run a Skoda Fabia for Munnich's wife, Mandy August, in the Super1600 class of the European championship next year, plans to expand to two or three Audis for 2015.

Munnich, which has a long history in rallycross, stood down from the Supercar division at the end of 2011 and has focused on Super1600 since while stepping up its international circuit racing commitments.

It ran Markus Winkelhock and Basseng to the 2012 FIA GT1 title with Mercedes and this year took a WTCC race win at the Hungaroring with reigning champion Rob Huff at the wheel.

The team's only confirmed circuit racing or next year is in January's Dubai 24 Hours. Huff, Winkelhock and Munnich will drive a Mercedes SLS AMG GT3 in the event.
