Torsby service: Tales of the unexpected

An explosive start to the Swedish Rally, round two of the World Championship, has already seen the exit of reigning champ Marcus Gronholm, while British duo Richard Burns and Colin McRae's hopes have also been wrecked by crashes. By the conclusion of SS3, the supporting cast has taken centre stage: Mitsubishi newboy Thomas Radstrom leads by 2.7secs from Peugeot's Harri Rovanpera

"You have to approach corners differently with this car than what I'm used to, because of its size, but the handling is brilliant. However, if I was in a car I was used to I might be even quicker. I don't think running down the order [because of his high start number] is much advantage, because the guys at the front are cutting the snowbanks, but I'm sure it's better in some places."

"I've got a problem with the brakes, they're leaking at the rear. I've been pumping them all morning and I had no brakes at all by the end of the third stage. I'm learning about the car all the time, but I already know it is very good."

"I don't quite trust this car yet. It's taking time to get used to the feeling. I've been off a few times and the windscreen misted up in SS1."

"Running first on the road has been a big problem. There was two inches of snow on top, but it was too hard for the studded tyres to go through. I had to slow three times for spectators on SS3. With the height of the snowbanks, they just can't hear me coming."

"I got held up by Colin McRae's snowdust on SS3 after he rejoined, it cost me a bit of time."

"To be just 4.5secs behind Kenneth [Eriksson, his local team mate] makes me very happy. I was a bit too aggressive on SS3 and lost a bit of time running wide into the fresh snow."

"I'm feeling a bit better today. My reactions are sometimes a bit slow, so I'm not pushing too hard."

"I was very afraid after stage one when I hit a very big rock in the middle of the road. It was meant for me...Maybe I have an enemy in Sweden!"
