Stage six: McRae retakes lead

Colin McRae has regained the lead in the Rally Australia after an off-course excursion dropped Didier Auriol from first to fifth

The Frenchman's Toyota suffered front-end damage in the incident, costing him around 25s. The effect this will have on his performance for the rest of the day is unknown at present.

Richard Burns was fastest on the stage and is now in fourth place, but the most significant consequence of Auriol's problem is that Tommi Makinen has been elevated to second. With his title rival now fifth, Makinen is looking increasingly good for a fourth world championship.

Further down, Peugeot's Francois Delecour continues to struggle, stuck in fourth gear and dropping time and places with every stage.
