Stage 5: Makinen leads after first day
Tommi Makinen has stretched his lead on the final stage of the day in the Rally of Monte Carlo
The world champion completed the section in 16.19.8s, nearly seven second quicker than Subaru's Richard Burns, to move 12 seconds ahead.
Burns finished second, ahead of Peugeot star Gilles Panizzi, who continues to maintain third place.
Ford's Carlos Sainz was fourth, ahead of Francois Delecour.
Colin McRae was eighth quickest on stage five, but moved up to seventh place overall, ahead of Subaru's Juha Kankkunen.
