Stage 4: Makinen takes lead in rally

Tommi Makinen has leapfrogged Richard Burns and stormed into the lead of the Rally of Monte Carlo

The world champion, driving a Mitsubishi, completed stage four 14.4 seconds quicker than the Subaru driver who came in third.

Peugeot driver Gilles Panizzi finished second on stage four to consolidate his third overall position behind Burns.

Ford's new recruit Carlos Sainz was fourth fastest, with Peugeot's Francois Delecour in fifth spot.

Juha Kankkunen (Subaru) enjoyed a better stage to come in sixth, and remain in seventh overall.
