SS5, Coldirodi 2: Bugalski fastest again

Frenchman Philippe Bugalski took his second consecutive stage win in Sanremo, as Gilles Panizzi edged out a small gap at the top of the leader board

Bugalski's time on the 12.41km stage has lifted him to fourth, demoting Peugeot's Didier Auriol to fifth. His next target is world champion Marcus Gronholm who could only set the sixth best time on this run. That lost the Finn more time on leader Panizzi and he now has over 15 seconds to make up.

Panizzi's closest challenger Jesus Puras managed the fourth best time of the stage, good enough to only drop behind the leader by 4.2 secs in second place overall. The Peugeot versus Citroen battle has got plenty of mileage yet to run.

Petter Solberg caused a stir by going third fastest in his Subaru, the best anyone not driving a Peugeot or Citroen has managed all day. He remains ninth overall behind the Fords of Carlos Sainz and Francois Delecour.

Joint championship leaders Colin McRae and Tommi Makinen continued to make little progress on a difficult first day. The pair have both faced technical problems and McRae remains 13th, while Makinen has made up a place to 15th. The prayers of first stage retirement Richard Burns are clearly being answered right now.
