SS15, S. Romolo 2: Loeb closes in

Sebastien Loeb is sniffing his first ever WRC victory after reducing the gap on leader Gilles Panizzi to 11 seconds on the penultimate stage of the event, the 28.64km S, Romolo test. It's raining in Italy and Loeb made the best of the adverse conditions, setting an unbeatable time of 20m20.6s on SS15

Panizzi, who won this event last year, will no doubt remember 1999 when, leading the event going into the last couple of stages, victory slipped through his fingers when Tommi Makinen overhauled the Frenchman's lead to win - again in damp conditions.

Panizzi was sixth fastest on SS15, a massive 21 seconds behind the Citroen Xsara of Loeb. Panizzi is a renowned late-braker, which might not be best suited on the wet asphalt.

With all competitors out on intermediate tyres, fog is also a problem on the last day of the event. Colin McRae, seventh fastest on S. Romolo, said: "The fog is so bad you can't even see the water running across the road."

His team mate Carlos Sainz made it through SS15 unscathed - the Spaniard was second fastest, just half a second slower than Loeb.

Marcus Gronholm's power steering problem looks to have been solved in service. The Finn lost over two minutes in the morning's first two stages but recovered to finish SS15 in third. Overall he is in seventh, six seconds behind Francois Delecour, who was eighth fastest on the stage.

The Peugeots of Renato Travaglia and Didier Auriol were fifth and sixth fastest. And McRae's seventh fastest time means he's just eight seconds behind Petter Solberg. Because of others ahead of the two not being nominated to score manufacturers' points on Sanremo, this battle for eighth is a fight for three makes points.
