SS16, Colle d'Ogia 2: Panizzi victorious

Peugeot's Gilles Panizzi scored his second Sanremo Rally win in a row, holding his nerve to finish just half a second behind the hard-charging Sebastien Loeb on SS16. The two Frenchmen finished Colle d'Ogia in eighth and ninth while two Fords enjoyed sitting at the top of the timesheets

Francois Delecour was the fastest on the rally's last stage, but perhaps more significantly Colin McRae came home in second. He moves above Petter Solberg in the standings to pick up three manufacturer points for Ford. The Scot finished eighth overall so remains tied with Tommi Makinen in the standings.

Former works Ford driver Simone Jean-Joseph, in a 2000-spec Peugeot 206, was third, followed by Carlos Sainz in the last of the Focuses. Sainz finished fourth overall and moves above Richard Burns in the championship.

Harri Rovanpera, who had a subdued rally after getting used to sealed surfaced roads, was fifth fastest followed by team mate Marcus Gronholm. Petter Solberg rounded out the top 10.

Didier Auriol was 11th fastest but keeps his third place overall. Because Citroen cannot score manufacturers' points this year, Peugeot therefore leave Italy with a maximium 16 points in the makes battle.
