SS13, S Romolo 1: Loeb on a flyer

Citroen Xsara WRC driver Sebastien Loeb began leg three of the Sanremo Rally on a real charge, taking eight seconds out of overnight leader Gilles Panizzi. Panizzi, who won this event last year, now has a 26 second advantage in his Peugeot 206 WRC, after the drivers tackled the 28.64km S. Romolo 1 stage, the longest on the Italian event

Italian Renato Travaglia moved up one place to fourth on the leaderboard, after setting the second fastest time on the stage. It was a Peugeot two-three-four as Didier Auriol and leader Gilles Panizzi came through in third and fourth.

Reigning world champion Marcus Gronholm had power steering failure 7km from the end of the San Romolo and lost over a minute on the leaders. He's now slipped back to sxith overall and is just seven seconds ahead of Ford's Francois Delecour.

Delecour's team mate Carlos Sainz retains his fifth position overall after setting the seventh fastest stage time and provided he can hold this to the finish he will move ahead of Subaru's Richard Burns in the drivers' standings to take third position.

Mitsubishi's Tommi Makinen appeared have put aside the electrical problems which dogged the all-new Lancer Evolution WRC on the first leg. He set the fifth fastest stage time - his best on the event so far - and now lies just outside the top 10 in 11th position. Colin McRae meanwhile is one position ahead of Makinen in 10th overall.

The cars will now complete SS14, before a 20 minute service halt and then run these same two stages in reverse order.
