SS12, Paijala: Sainz storms it

Carlos Sainz set his second top time of the 2001 Rally Finland with a narrow victory on the 12.8km Paijala stage, though with the top seven covered by just 2.2s, there was little effect on the overall leaderboard

Harri Rovanpera's dodgy damper held out to allow the Finn to head a Peugeot trio in second to fourth places, with Sebastian Lindholm ahead of Marcus Gronholm.

Markko Martin and Richard Burns were next up in the Subarus ahead of Colin McRae's Focus. Ford's Francois Delecour and Mitsubishi's Toni Gardemeister set identical times, to be eight equal just 0.3s shy of McRae.

Overall Gronholm stays ahead from Burns, Martin, Rovanpera and McRae.

Didier Auriol is still sixth overall. He completed the top 10 on the stage in his Peugeot, with Daniel Carlsson's Toyota 11th and rally legend Markku Alen 12th equal in his Focus with Pasi Hagstrom's Toyota.
