SS11, Vero-Pont II: Drama for McRae
Colin McRae's hopes of salvaging a world championship point in Corsica suffered a major blow when power steering failure on the 18.28km Vero-Pont II stage pushed him down to 11th overall. The Scot's Ford Focus hit a rock in the road which pushed up the sump guard and damaged the power steering pump
McRae is now four places behind rival Richard Burns, who set the fifth fastest stage time in his Subaru.
McRae was examining the car ahead of SS12, the final stage of the day. Without a service stop available, he will have to manhandle the Focus over the arduous 30km stage before he can head back to a final service and overnight parc ferme.
Meanwhile, at the top of the leaderboard, it was Jesus Puras who set the fastest stage time, closely followed by Gilles Panizzi's Peugeot. Didier Auriol is 23 seconds further back in third, having set the third fastest stage time and Francois Delecour and Petter Solberg complete the top five.
