SS10, Batley: Burns in command

After the marathon of SS9, Rally New Zealand returned to more manageable competitive sections with SS10, the 19.82km Batley test. And it's Subaru's Richard Burns that has the bit between his teeth on the second day of the event, extending his overall lead after SS10

In a turn around of SS9's results, Burns took the stage win ahead of flying Finn Harri Rovanpera in the Peugeot. The Englishman, running ninth on the road today, has extended his lead to over 10 seconds overall after closest challenger Colin McRae in the Ford Focus posted the fifth fastest time through Batley.

Didier Auriol finished the stage in third, just ahead of fellow Frenchman Francois Delecour, who is fighting back after rolling his Focus on SS9.

Tommi Makinen has swapped places on the leaderboard with team mate Freddy Loix after the four-time world champion set the sixth fastest time through Batley. The Finn is currently in 11th and is reeling in overnight leader Kenneth Eriksson in the Hyundai Accent.

Eriksson in paying the price of his leg one lead, being first out on the road and clearing a path for others to follow. He's 10th overall and five seconds clear of the charging Makinen.

Marcus Gronholm will have to be wary of team mate Rovanpera - the world champion was seventh through Batley and lies in fourth overall, however his advantage over Rovanpera has been cut to less than four seconds as Harri puts the foot down on leg two.

Behind Gronholm, Carlos Sainz, Petter Solberg and Freddy Loix round out the top 10 times on SS10.
