SS12, Brooks: Guess who?

Richard Burns is blowing away the opposition on the second day of Rally New Zealand. His third consecutive stage win, on Brooks, SS12, sees the Subaru driver's advantage stretch to almost 20 seconds over Colin McRae, who was fourth fastest on the stage.

Harri Rovanpera was again hot on the tail of Burns, the Peugeot driver just two seconds slower than the Englishman on the 16.03km test. In the overall classification, Rovanpera is breathing down the neck of McRae's team mate Carlos Sainz in the battle for third. The Finn has cut to gap to just four seconds on Sainz, who was fifth fastest on Brooks.

Another Finn now making progress after a disastrous first day is Tommi Makinen. The Mitsubishi driver managed to post third fastest on SS12 and has now moved up to seventh, setting his sights on sixth, held currently by the second Subaru of Petter Solberg.

After his team's time-keeping cock-up on Friday, which saw Marcus Gronholm finish the day third rather than a more ideal sixth or seventh, the reigning world champion is holding his fifth place overall. He was sixth fastest through Brooks, just ahead of team mate Didier Auriol.

Francois Delecour continues to fight back from his bad start this morning, when he rolled his Ford Focus after a concentration lapse. The Frenchman was eighth through SS12 as he tries to catch Toshi Arai's Subaru.

Petter Solberg and Alister McRae round out the top 10. Freddy Loix spun his Mitsubishi Carisma on Brooks, but despite the mistake, he finished the stage just 13 seconds slower than Burns, as the rally heads to the last stage before service, SS13, the 11.64 Paparoa Station test.
