SS1/2: Gronholm claims early lead

Marcus Gronholm will head into the first full day of the Rally Argentina with a slender 2.3s lead after setting the pace over the opening two super-special stages, held on the purpose built Pro-Racing complex on Villa Carlos Paz on Thursday evening

The world champion set the fastest time on the first run through Lane A of the complex and then consolidated his lead with the third fastest time on his Lane B run.

Petter Solberg found himself in second overall, having set the second and fifth fastest times through the two stages, with last year's winner Carlos Sainz third for Citroen.

Gronholm raced head to head against team-mate Richard Burns, and the two proved closely matched in their Peugeot 206s. Although Burns was only fifth fastest on his Lane A run, he set the fastest time in Lane B to find himself fourth overall.

Former champions Colin McRae and Tommi Makinen emerged from the stages in fifth and sixth, with Ford star Markko Martin seventh, after dropping seven seconds at the start of his second run when he bungled his start.
