Day 1 am: Gronholm pulls clear

Marcus Gronholm has assumed his customary position at the top of the leaderboard after the first morning proper of the Rally Argentina, and has already built a lead of 14.9s over Citroen star Carlos Sainz

Having established a small lead after the opening two super special stages on Thursday evening, the reigning world champion was instantly on the pace this morning, setting the fastest stage times on SS3 and SS4.

Aside from Gronholm, there is little to separate the main runners, with SS6 winner Sainz just 0.4s ahead of Tommi Makinen, who set the fastest time on SS5. Markko Martin is currently fourth, just a further 3.4s back from the Finn. Richard Burns leads the British contingent in fifth position, with Colin McRae right behind in his Citroen.

After a promising start, Subaru star Petter Solberg has hit misfortune early on. The Norwegian was running second overall when he rolled his Impreza on SS5. Although he was able to continue, Solberg dropped two minutes to the leaders, and is currently 13th overall.
