Solberg confident of GB repeat

Rally Japan winner Petter Solberg hopes to make it a hat-trick of wins when the World Rally Championship heads back to Europe for the Wales Rally GB, an event the Norwegian has won for the past two years

Fresh from his dominant win at Rally Japan last weekend, Solberg is full of confidence despite a substantially different Rally GB expected this year due to its earlier September slot rather than November. Conditions are therefore expected to be dry making it one of the quickest gravel rallies of the season.

"We're trying to win every rally," said Solberg, who currently lies 30 points behind leader Sebastien Loeb. "That's our strategy. To have a chance of catching Sebastien, we have to win the rest of the rallies, and he has to be unlucky. But Rally GB is a good event for us. It has very good stages, and will be a lovely course. I think we'll be prepared. We have proved all year that we are quick on gravel, and we'll just have to wait and see."

Subaru team boss David Lapworth was full of praise for Solberg following his Japan victory and said the team will adopt the same approach in Wales.

"Based on our current form on gravel, we have to feel confident," he said. "There's little to choose between these guys and [Peugeot's] Marcus [Gronholm] also. We go to each rally to win, as everyone does. I don't know if we can, but we will try. We've seen on asphalt in Germany, for example, that a lot depends on the weather, so I wouldn't like to make any predictions because I think tactics are out of the window - except for Loeb. It should make for great rallies."
