Sainz joins lead battle
Carlos Sainz is putting in a late charge on his home rally, narrowing the gap to the leaders in Catalunya after setting his second fastest stage time in a row
Colin McRae still leads, but only has a 4.3s advantage over Subaru's Richard Burns. With Sainz only 5s off Burns, the top three are covered by a mere nine seconds as they head into the overnight halt.
The contest will be decided over another four stages tomorrow morning, covering just under 110kms.
Barring miracles, Tommi Makinen will not be part of that fight. The reigning champion lost a lot of time on stage 11 after he lost his brakes 5kms from the finish. He holds fourth place, but is now 35s off the leader.
The three Peugeots continue to squabble over the minor points positions, Francois Delecour now back on the pace after losing the use of all three lower gears earlier in the day.
