Martin poised for Ford switch
Subaru driver Markko Martin is extremely likely to be confirmed as a Ford driver for 2002 within the next few days, according to well-placed sources
The Estonian, whose programme within the Prodrive team has been reduced this season, is said to have been attracted to a Focus seat by the possibility of more extensive testing, 14 events and the ability to gauge his performance against both Carlos Sainz and Colin McRae.
Martin will take the place of Francois Delecour, who is likely to find a berth at either Mitsubishi (the current favourite) or Hyundai. Autosport.com understands that the Frenchman was offered a more comprehensive two-year deal by the Ford team some months ago, but that wrangles over money have left both sides exasperated. The deal would also be attractive to Ford, which has been searching for a 'young star' since Subaru scooped Petter Solberg just over a year ago.
A Ford team spokesman declined to comment on the rumour. Martin himself said: "I've had talks with a number of teams. In fact, I've had about five different options on the table. But it wouldn't be fair for me to comment at this stage about that." Current employer Subaru and Ford aside, Mitsubishi, Hyundai and Skoda have tried to secure his services for 2002.
Ford is also likely to confirm some Focus WRC outings for promising Belgian Francois Duval, who has set some stunning times in the inaugural FIA Super 1600 Cup this year at the wheel of his Puma.
