After two years of trying with its Xsara T4, Citroen finally took a World Rally Championship win on the Tour de Corse on Sunday with Jesus Puras behind the wheel taking his maiden WRC win. The French marque is gearing up for a full assault on the World Rally crown in 2003 and has been dominant on the selection of asphalt events it has competed in this year. Despite Philippe Bugalski retiring on the first day of the French rally, it all finally came together with Puras beating the Peugeot 206s of Gilles Panizzi and Didier Auriol. Autosport.com's rallies editor John McIlroy caught up with Citroen boss Guy Frequelin in Corsica
"This is a fantastic day for the whole team. At the beginning of this year I gave an objective - to try to win one of our four rallies. And we've achieved that. Plus we also have a second in Sanremo, a sixth on the Acropolis and we were competitive in Catalunya too. We also won the French championship with Sebastien Loeb in a Xsara kit car, and the Super 1600 Cup with Seb in a Saxo too. It has been a great year! We're also especially proud of this result because Citroen is the only team in the world championship that prepares all of the car, including the engines."
"Fantastic. He has done exactly what I asked him to do - won without doing more than necessary. I know he has had some contact with other teams and I don't know how advanced those discussions are but we'll be trying to see if we have enough rallies to give to him for 2002."
"Philippe's accident was caused by a piece of metal under the tyre. He was actually slower at the corner where he went off than Jesus was, so we know from the data that it wasn't his fault. Again, he's had talks with other teams."
"I hope that he stays in the team, yes. I think he wants to stay. For the moment we haven't had time - him and me - to sit down and really talk, but now we have to speak. I think we can find an arrangement but nothing's signed yet."
"We have seven rallies, but we haven't decided on the line-up of events or drivers! But it's true that the Safari is important because when you do the tests there, you build a very strong car. Generally if you have a car that's strong enough for the Safari, it's strong enough for all the other rallies."
