Martin mounts bid for second

While Monte Carlo Rally leader Sebastien Loeb has entered cruise control mode, entertainment on the final morning of the event is being provided by an all-Ford battle for second. Markko Martin made huge inroads on team-mate Francois Duval on SS12, but the Belgian responded on SS13 to show he's not giving up the position without a fight

Estonian Martin dropped behind Duval in heavy fog yesterday, but clearly found conditions more to his liking this morning. Over the course of SS12, the classic 32.58km Sospel - Turini - La Bollene stage, Martin was 6.9s quicker than anyone, but more importantly cut 9.4s of the deficit to Duval.

However, Duval responded with the second fastest time over the 19.52km of SS13, regaining 3.1s of his advantage. With two stages left to run today (Sunday), the gap between the two stands at just 6.7s.

With an overnight margin of nearly 90s, Loeb could afford to take things easy this morning. This he duly did, setting the fourth fastest time on SS12 and the fifth quickest on SS13, reducing his lead to 'only' 1m13.2s.

The rest of the leaderboard remained largely static after the morning's two stages, although Petter Solberg gave himself a boost after Friday's fence-bashing exploits by setting the fastest time on SS13.

We'll have all the new from the final two stages of the Monte Carlo Rally on autosport.com later.
