Martin hopeful of first WRC win

Ford's Markko Martin has told AUTOSPORT that he believes his first World Rally Championship win could yet come this season following his strong performance on last weekend's Acropolis Rally

The Estonian was leading the rough gravel event and was on course to score his maiden WRC victory until an enforced tyre change mid-stage on the second leg saw him slide down the leaderboard.

He eventually finished sixth, but after beating his more established WRC stars for pace, Martin is confident about his prospects on August's Rally Finland - another gravel event he knows well.

"I showed my pace in Greece and how I could deal with the situation," Martin told AUTOSPORT. "I've yet to try the car for Finland, but I seem to go well there, so there are still chances for the first win to come this year."

His boss at Ford, Malcolm Wilson, has been full of praise for his young star, but said it was Martin's attitude as much as his pace that was impressive in Greece.

"What really impressed me was not necessarily his speed, but how he sustained it and how he coped with the situation," said Wilson. "Even after losing the lead, he bounced back to set fastest times and move back up the leaderboard."

AUTOSPORT is on sale now, priced £2.80
