Mannisenmaki doubtful for Oz and GB
Tommi Makinen's co-driver Risto Mannisenmaki looks set to miss next month's Rally Australia and is doubtful for the season-closing Rally of Great Britain following the Mitsubishi pairing's frightening accident on Leg 1 of the Corsica Rally
The duo, who are in the thick of the world championship battle, crashed out and rolled down a cliff on Friday's fifth and final stage. Makinen was uninjured, but Mannisenmaki had to be removed from the upside down car with suspected back injuries.
The Finn is still being examined in a Marseilles hospital, where a rumoured crushed or possibly broken vertebra could sideline him from the contest. TheMitsubishi team will issue a statement on the subject at 16:00 BST (17:00 local time) today after more extensive tests have been carried out.
The accident has re-opened debate over medical and rescue facilities on France's round of the World Rally Championship. After the accident happened, Mannisenmaki was tended to at the scene by spectators and a TV crew as they awaited the arrival of rescue crews. The stage was stopped following the incident.
